Influence of live coral cover on coral-reef fish communities

چکیده
The effect of percentage live coral cover on the number of fish species and individuals was determined by censusing fish from a series of reefs of comparable structural complexity, but with different proportions of live coral, in the lagoon of Mataiva Atoll, Tuamotu Archipelago. Regression analysis showed that there was a highly significant (p < 0.001) positive relationship between live coral cover and total number of species, number of species 250 m-2, and number of individuals 250 m-2. Changes in live coral cover estimated to be as small as 0 % to < 2 %, and < 2 % to 2 to < 5 %, produced significant increases in the total number of species and number of individuals 250 m-'. A change of 0 % to 2 to < 5 % caused a significant increase in the number of species 250 m-2. Species richness of the Chaetodontidae, Pomacentridae, Labridae, Scaridae. Acanthuridae and Gobiidae rose with increasing live coral cover, while that of Apogonidae remained relatively constant. Many of the 115 fish species recorded discriminated between sites of differing live coral cover; 68 % were found only at sites with some live coral, whereas 29 % were common to sites with or without live coral, and 3 % were only present at sites where all coral was dead. The species compositions of sites from the same zone of live coral cover were more similar to one another than to those at sites from different zones.

Relative Importance of Coral Cover, Habitat Complexity and Diversity in Determining the Structure of Reef Fish Communities
The structure of coral reef habitat has a pronounced influence on the diversity, composition and abundance of reef-associated fishes. However, the particular features of the habitat that are most critical are not always known. Coral habitats can vary in many characteristics, notably live coral cover, topographic complexity and coral diversity, but the relative effects of these habitat character...
متن کاملRetention of Habitat Complexity Minimizes Disassembly of Reef Fish Communities following Disturbance: A Large-Scale Natural Experiment
High biodiversity ecosystems are commonly associated with complex habitats. Coral reefs are highly diverse ecosystems, but are under increasing pressure from numerous stressors, many of which reduce live coral cover and habitat complexity with concomitant effects on other organisms such as reef fishes. While previous studies have highlighted the importance of habitat complexity in structuring r...
متن کاملRecovery from disturbance of coral and reef fish communities on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia
Coral reefs are consistently and increasingly subject to acute disturbance events that often lead to a reduction in live coral cover with concomitant effects on the diversity and abundance of coral reef fishes. Here we examine changes in both hard coral and reef-fish assemblages over 15 yr following major losses of coral from exposed reefs in 2 widely separated sectors of the Great Barrier Reef...
متن کاملTemporal comparison and predictors of fish species abundance and richness on undisturbed coral reef patches.
Large disturbances can cause rapid degradation of coral reef communities, but what baseline changes in species assemblages occur on undisturbed reefs through time? We surveyed live coral cover, reef fish abundance and fish species richness in 1997 and again in 2007 on 47 fringing patch reefs of varying size and depth at Mersa Bareika, Ras Mohammed National Park, Egypt. No major human or natural...
متن کاملMore coral, more fish? Contrasting snapshots from a remote Pacific atoll
Coral reefs are in decline across the globe as a result of overexploitation, pollution, disease and, more recently, climate change. The impacts of changes in coral cover on associated fish communities can be difficult to predict because of the uneven dependence of reef fish species on corals for food, shelter or the three-dimensional structure they provide. We compared live coral cover, reef fi...
